Pulling a vacuum after evacuating a system aims to dry the system and purge non-condensable gases. In a deep vacuum, residual water vapor will boil off and be removed by the vacuum pump, drying the refrigerant lines, oil, and any components. At the same time, gases that don’t condense with the refrigerant—air, nitrogen, and other non-condensables—are drawn out, preventing them from occupying space and hindering proper condensation and heat transfer. If moisture and non-condensables remain, they can lead to corrosion, acid formation, ice blockage, poor lubrication, and reduced efficiency once the system is charged. The goal is to reach a very low vacuum (low micron range) before charging to ensure a clean, dry, and ready-to-operate system.
